Here is a short description of what Wing Chun is written by Sifu Ben:
Wing Chun was developed around 350 years ago in Southern china. It was later adapted and taught by the late Yip Man of which taught the late Bruce Lee who exposed Wing Chun to the world through his films. Since, the art has developed and grown, branching out into varying styles and organisation reaching to all corners of the earth.
Wing Chun can be practiced by everybody, regardless of your shape and size. Muscular strength is not key to success in Wing Chun. Relaxed and responsive strength will enable the practioner to over come a greater force and elimiate potential threats. Physically it will improve coordination, movement, flexibility, reflexes, balance, posture, structure, alignment and fitness. Mentaly it will stimulate you, improving confidence, awareness and relieve stress, making you relaxed and responsive but overall it’s fun and really cool.
The philosophy of the Wing Chun is to overcome obstacles that we face throughout our life in the most effective method possible. Conflict in all it’s forms; physical, mental or emotional is one of life’s great obstacles, and one that generates massive anxiety in our society.
The main objective of Wing Chun is to be a realistic system of self-defense. Wing Chun does not focus on fighting “techniques”, instead relying on fighting and energy principles to be followed at all times. The central idea is that, under pressure, it is impossible to visually recognize the precise direction and speed of an attack and make a conscious decision on an effective way in which to react, all within the very brief amount of time you have before your opponent’s attack lands. Rather, one must (counter) attack immediately in a very direct and protected manner and rely on reflexes to determine how to react if the opponent’s attack continues to pose a problem. Chi sao, or “sticking hands” trains students to respond reflexively to the speed, force, and direction of an attack, based on tactile information – which the human brain processes much faster than visual information.
